from the ny post
May 6, 2008 --
If she wasn't lucky with her choice of outfit - eesh! - Anna Wintour had her stars lined up for the weather and the A-list talent who turned out for her Costume Institute Gala last night. Oh, and a little outfit called the Metropolitan Museum had some thing to do with it, too.
Each spring, the ultra- chic extravaganza at the Met, known as "Anna's party," mixes glamour with iron-fist rules as the Vogue editrix rains on the dreams of countless Hollywood and fashion-world elite with her ruthless micro-managing.
Wintour herself personally vets and approves the guest list - and that goes for the world's top designers, who must clear their celebrity escorts with her.
Guests have clearly observed the Wrath of Wintour. Bobbleheaded stylist-to-the-starlets Rachel Zoe's was very publicly dis-invited after making the mortal mistake of dissing Anna in print. "Anna is one of my heroes," Zoe had said, "but they say I'm more influential."
Zoe uttered that regrettable remark last October; Wintour patiently waited until last week to exact her revenge.
Arriving first on a perfect spring evening were George Clooney and Julia Roberts - they chaired the event, "Superheroes" - along with the night's honorary chairman, Giorgio Armani.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes made their entrance much later, joining Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, the Olsen twins, Tom Brady and Giselle Bundchen, and Victoria and David Beckham.
Guests certainly followed the party-planner-from-hell's directive that thou shalt dress like a superhero if thou wants to be in Vogue's party pages. (Staffers dressed in white or silver.)
Upping the intrigue: Armani, himself recently dissed Wintour - publicly and to her face! - when he told an international press corps they had different taste levels, and that he was ultimately "indifferent" to her.
Shockingly, they settled their differences; Armani is a favorite of both Clooney and Roberts. (Clooney hosted the after-party at Bungalow 8.)
Anna is tough - by the looks of her dress, ram tough.
During her 13-year-tenure as the evening's co-chair, she has elevated the annual Costume Institute Gala to Manhattan's premier social event.
It is the closest to a public barometer of subtly shifting power rankings and social status; there is as much attention paid to who attends as who doesn't, and the seating charts are subject to breakdowns.
New York Ranger and new Vogue intern Sean Avery, whose lacerated spleen caused him to miss the Broadway Blues' doomed playoff finale Saturday, was well enough to attend last night's gala.
Once more democratic and relatively egalitarian - anyone who could afford a ticket could go, and there was a $200-per-head after-party for fashion students and fans - the gala now bills itself as beyond exclusive.
This year's cost: $6,500 per seat.
[Emilie says, actually it was a minimum of $7,500 per seat]

freshman fifteen
From the New York Times:
Bowdoin College, with 1,800 students and a postcard-perfect northern New England campus, projects a rather sedate image. But in Thorne hall on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday at midnight, hundreds of students socialize and eat in an airy, open space with music thumping.
This is Super Snack, a selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, grilled cheese sandwiches, and other simple foods, one innovation the college has made in response to student input.
“They love food,” said Mary Lou Kennedy, Bowdoin’s dining director. “They love the community of food. They were Slow Food 10 years before it became a movement. At dinner, they come and stay for an hour and a half.”

(My First) Met Opening: Abstract Expressionism

Last night, the first exhibition opening reception that I really played a role in organizing took place. I was worried we were going to run out of food and drink, but we didn't. Everyone appeared to enjoy themselves. More images from the exhibition are here.

(NOTE: how strange + convenient that the internet is able to provide the digital pictures i didn't take myself this weekend)

(courtesy of the Gagosian Gallery)
jrs wants to buy this murakami painting that we nicknamed "the soccerball," but neither of us can fathom how much it possibly costs. we went to see it at the gagosian on madison avenue.
(courtesy of the tasting room website)
saturday: jrs and i went to the tasting room in nolita and sat at the second table from the left (the row against the wall) in this picture. the couple sitting next to us bickered, sent their food back, and complained that the cuisine was "too american." they also argued with the waiter about whiskey. we, on the other hand, wiped our plates clean.

(courtesy of Joe's Shanghai)
finally! the famous soup dumplings you get at this busy restaurant in china town. like all things that taste good, nn says the secret is in the fat.

(courtesy of the TASCHEN website)
nn, jrs, and i hit the TASCHEN flagship store on greene street on sunday. it's german. they have great art books.
OTHER SPOTS his this weekend: guggenheim + the met; ted baker; balthazar bakery; maison du chocolat ...

it happened last week:
bedbugs - i got a notice from my building management company around midnight that read something like, "... found minor outbreak in an apartment near yours ... please pack up everything you own in a plastic bag by tomorrow morning ..." - it was traumatic and gross and everyone at work thought i had cooties. good news is i now own a vacuum cleaner.
minnesota - i took northwest airlines to minneapolis. my first ever visit to minnesota. jamie is there for work. the visit included the mall of america, bars with rooftops, long cab rides, quiet (as in, no sounds or noises), nice old people, the walker art center, a reunion with quinn from college, half an irish car bomb that made me ill (thanks, quinn), an unsuccessful hunt for indian food, warmer weather than new york (!).

skiing in california
one of the most amazing things about (northern) california is that you can experience winter and spring/summer in the same day:
AM: get up early, ski/snowboard while getting decent face-tan (or burn, if you're not careful), and hang out on slopes that are completely covered in snow and remind you of christmas time
PM: once exhausted/winded and legs can't move anymore, get back in car and drive 3 hours/sit in traffic with the rest of the bay area in the early afternoon, to arrive in the city, where the thermometer reads 70 degrees

fake orchid
last night nikki and i went to a kitsch thai place on east 9th street - the fake orchid. we sat at an old school desk which we kept hitting our knees on; it wobbled. it was great. there were indeed fake orchids, porcelain bunnies, post cards and drawings posted at random on the walls, and dim pink lighting. the curry was excellent and the wontons had actual crab in them.

my sincerest apologies for being missing from the blogspot for so long.
there has been some kind of severe slump in my workload, so i'm back - though i'm not sure for how long ...
end of december 2006
my good friend julie announces her engagement (!) to her man. i hyperventilate into the phone while walking home on columbus avenue and say all the wrong things, like "did you say yes?!" instead of just giving her the conventional and much much safer "congratulations." i go engagement congratulations card shopping (i am all over this occasion), which is so much harder than one thinks; so many of them are focused on THE RING and THE DRESS. apparently, wedding planning is not in my future.
january 2007
new year's eve: had too much to drink the eve before new year's eve and had WORST hang over ever (ever!) all of the the next day. like could not eat worst hangover ever, and i can generally always eat. not even coffee, it was bad. we had plans, though, so - i pull myself together. meet jamie's friends for dinner at CRU (a wine restaurant - not ideal for my hangover), followed by new year's eve at PRAVDA on Lafayette (see previous post).
my cousins from australia visit for a week: we see "the drowsy chaperone" musical and introduce my mother to Junior's; dine with my dad in midtown; crash my cousin's friend's apartment that is nicer and bigger than my own (and he's a student at NYU with no job) etc.
1/12-1/15: trip to san francisco; jamie and i build an IKEA shelf/wardrobe thing and it takes us 3 hours. AND we have an extra peg leftover, which is never a good thing. the reward is Italian food. mmm.
MOMOFUKU SSAM bar with andrew - finally, after two attempts to go to this restaurant. the chef is there that night, after a write-up in New York Magazine. i'm star-struck and totally in love with the pork burrito and mochi ball plate for dessert. amazing. i heart NY moment.
1/24: my dad's birthday. he asks me why i'm calling; my mom completely forgets about it until i mention it. i guess that's what happens when you stop counting the years.
1/25: zeke's birthday. he's still in China.
66 (restaurant) - dinner with Nikki. i've wanted to go here ever since i saw a profile on it on some public access food show ("Reservations Required" - that may be the title of the show). it's down in Tribeca. had their prix fixe - the food was good, the decor even better. down to the silverware. very sleek. aquarium (fish!). nikki gives the bathroom a thumbs down - oh well, it can't be perfect.
february 2007
2/1: nikki's birthday. theme is college night. she finishes an entire fishbowl (on her own, nearly) and it all comes back up a few minutes later. one of her co-workers splatters BBQ sauce all over another co-worker. messy.
TABLA - jamie comes for the weekend, and we go to TABLA (our second upscale Indian experience after TAMARIND). we eat a lot. that's all i really remember - and jamie really enjoying the wine, but that happens a lot.
2/9-2/11: trip to san francisco - ski plans fall through because, ironically, there is too much snow for a re-beginner like me. also, celebrity golf tournament plans fall through because jamie's friend doesn't make the cut. so, what do we do? spend money on clothes and cake and blowfish sushi to die for.
FACTORY GIRL - nikki and i see what we both know will be a horrible movie. the next day, nikki sends me an email affirming just how bad it was. there is our official review.
VALENTINE's DAY - annual v-day dinner with nikki. funny how, eventhough we used to do this when we were both single, the tradition continues eventhough i'm now in a relationship. (although i have told everyone i know and given jamie enough grief about this, i can't resist sharing just one last time that he didn't call me on valentine's day. or the day after. in fact, i didn't hear from him until he was on his way to the airport to come to new york. he was preoccupied with paintballing and toasting fellow co-workers at a retreat in napa; i suppose i will accept that excuse and move on with my life)
dinner with julia at a cute italian spot in the east village - she also recently got engaged - congratulations to her and ralph! she is going to have a great wedding, all DIY. the way people in their twenties should do it, i think.
sushi with gloria at sushi a go-go, which is around the corner from my apartment, but this was my first time eating there. gloria is fabulous. she works in the design department at the NYBG, which is how i got to know her. we worked on invitations together - she designed them and i proofed them. fond memories.
DENTIST - i have a cavity. a small one, but still. at 26!
CAFE HABANA - dinner with jamie and nikki. it is crazy crowded, but really good. i recommend the cuban sandwich. mmm.
THEORY - nikki got a new job (yay!) and is leaving her present employer, Theory, the clothing line. jamie is most affected by this change, since his entire wardrobe consists of pants and shirts from Theory. we went to the store one last time to milk her discount for all it's worth.
EMMA is in new york for a brief visit in lieu of the Tacita Dean (the artist she works for in Berlin, also featured in this month's Vogue) Opening at the Guggenheim museum. we have lunch at the Met and go to a gallery opening at the Marian Goodman Gallery, where she used to be an intern. it is nice to see emma again, as always.
nikki and i hit the SCOPENew York contemporary art fair. if only we had expendible $ income to buy art to hang on our walls. we also develop this brief obsession with owning rainboots (just in time for a slushy winter storm that arrives overnight), and satisfy our other obsession - with british movies - by going to see "starter for 10."
THE HILLS - i'm 20% ashamed to admit this, but the first season is out on DVD and has spent some quality time in my DVD player. will somebody please help HEIDI? stuffing envelopes is the only way into the events industry. i should know, i've stuffed, stamped, sealed, and addressed hundreds of them in the last 3 years.
there has been some kind of severe slump in my workload, so i'm back - though i'm not sure for how long ...
