my sincerest apologies for being missing from the blogspot for so long.
there has been some kind of severe slump in my workload, so i'm back - though i'm not sure for how long ...
end of december 2006
my good friend julie announces her engagement (!) to her man. i hyperventilate into the phone while walking home on columbus avenue and say all the wrong things, like "did you say yes?!" instead of just giving her the conventional and much much safer "congratulations." i go engagement congratulations card shopping (i am all over this occasion), which is so much harder than one thinks; so many of them are focused on THE RING and THE DRESS. apparently, wedding planning is not in my future.
january 2007
new year's eve: had too much to drink the eve before new year's eve and had WORST hang over ever (ever!) all of the the next day. like could not eat worst hangover ever, and i can generally always eat. not even coffee, it was bad. we had plans, though, so - i pull myself together. meet jamie's friends for dinner at CRU (a wine restaurant - not ideal for my hangover), followed by new year's eve at PRAVDA on Lafayette (see previous post).
my cousins from australia visit for a week: we see "the drowsy chaperone" musical and introduce my mother to Junior's; dine with my dad in midtown; crash my cousin's friend's apartment that is nicer and bigger than my own (and he's a student at NYU with no job) etc.
1/12-1/15: trip to san francisco; jamie and i build an IKEA shelf/wardrobe thing and it takes us 3 hours. AND we have an extra peg leftover, which is never a good thing. the reward is Italian food. mmm.
MOMOFUKU SSAM bar with andrew - finally, after two attempts to go to this restaurant. the chef is there that night, after a write-up in New York Magazine. i'm star-struck and totally in love with the pork burrito and mochi ball plate for dessert. amazing. i heart NY moment.
1/24: my dad's birthday. he asks me why i'm calling; my mom completely forgets about it until i mention it. i guess that's what happens when you stop counting the years.
1/25: zeke's birthday. he's still in China.
66 (restaurant) - dinner with Nikki. i've wanted to go here ever since i saw a profile on it on some public access food show ("Reservations Required" - that may be the title of the show). it's down in Tribeca. had their prix fixe - the food was good, the decor even better. down to the silverware. very sleek. aquarium (fish!). nikki gives the bathroom a thumbs down - oh well, it can't be perfect.
february 2007
2/1: nikki's birthday. theme is college night. she finishes an entire fishbowl (on her own, nearly) and it all comes back up a few minutes later. one of her co-workers splatters BBQ sauce all over another co-worker. messy.
TABLA - jamie comes for the weekend, and we go to TABLA (our second upscale Indian experience after TAMARIND). we eat a lot. that's all i really remember - and jamie really enjoying the wine, but that happens a lot.
2/9-2/11: trip to san francisco - ski plans fall through because, ironically, there is too much snow for a re-beginner like me. also, celebrity golf tournament plans fall through because jamie's friend doesn't make the cut. so, what do we do? spend money on clothes and cake and blowfish sushi to die for.
FACTORY GIRL - nikki and i see what we both know will be a horrible movie. the next day, nikki sends me an email affirming just how bad it was. there is our official review.
VALENTINE's DAY - annual v-day dinner with nikki. funny how, eventhough we used to do this when we were both single, the tradition continues eventhough i'm now in a relationship. (although i have told everyone i know and given jamie enough grief about this, i can't resist sharing just one last time that he didn't call me on valentine's day. or the day after. in fact, i didn't hear from him until he was on his way to the airport to come to new york. he was preoccupied with paintballing and toasting fellow co-workers at a retreat in napa; i suppose i will accept that excuse and move on with my life)
dinner with julia at a cute italian spot in the east village - she also recently got engaged - congratulations to her and ralph! she is going to have a great wedding, all DIY. the way people in their twenties should do it, i think.
sushi with gloria at sushi a go-go, which is around the corner from my apartment, but this was my first time eating there. gloria is fabulous. she works in the design department at the NYBG, which is how i got to know her. we worked on invitations together - she designed them and i proofed them. fond memories.
DENTIST - i have a cavity. a small one, but still. at 26!
CAFE HABANA - dinner with jamie and nikki. it is crazy crowded, but really good. i recommend the cuban sandwich. mmm.
THEORY - nikki got a new job (yay!) and is leaving her present employer, Theory, the clothing line. jamie is most affected by this change, since his entire wardrobe consists of pants and shirts from Theory. we went to the store one last time to milk her discount for all it's worth.
EMMA is in new york for a brief visit in lieu of the Tacita Dean (the artist she works for in Berlin, also featured in this month's Vogue) Opening at the Guggenheim museum. we have lunch at the Met and go to a gallery opening at the Marian Goodman Gallery, where she used to be an intern. it is nice to see emma again, as always.
nikki and i hit the SCOPENew York contemporary art fair. if only we had expendible $ income to buy art to hang on our walls. we also develop this brief obsession with owning rainboots (just in time for a slushy winter storm that arrives overnight), and satisfy our other obsession - with british movies - by going to see "starter for 10."
THE HILLS - i'm 20% ashamed to admit this, but the first season is out on DVD and has spent some quality time in my DVD player. will somebody please help HEIDI? stuffing envelopes is the only way into the events industry. i should know, i've stuffed, stamped, sealed, and addressed hundreds of them in the last 3 years.
